Instant Payments for Businesses: Use Cases, Benefits & 2025 Challenges

Universwiftnet 2025 – Pay, get paid... instantly!
At Universwiftnet 2025, Utsit and Oaklen co-hosted a workshop dedicated to instant payments, gathering around fifty participants eager to learn more about practical use cases and upcoming regulatory developments.
Where do we stand with instant payments?
In Europe, instant payments (SCT Inst) are no longer a theoretical concept. Since the partial entry into force of the EU “Instant Payments” regulation on January 9, 2025, usage has been rapidly increasing among individuals.
More than 70 countries worldwide now have an instant payment solution in place. Several systems, such as Swift GPI, Nexus (BIS) or One Leg Out in Europe, also enable cross-border instant transfers.
But what about businesses?
Through a well-structured presentation, the workshop addressed several key questions:
- What are the real business benefits (speed, traceability, predictability, customer satisfaction)?
- What are the technical and organizational considerations?
- How can companies prepare for the October 9, 2025 deadline, which will remove the limits on instant payments and require banks to implement Verification of Payee (VoP) services for batch payments.
Instant payment for collections/disbursements: a trust accelerator
One of the most appreciated parts of the workshop focused on practical corporate use cases for instant payments:
- Guaranteeing the date and time of settlement to the beneficiary,
- Combining e-invoicing and instant payments to improve cash forecasting,
- Contracting with banks for scheduled instant payments, reducing real-time error handling,
- Integrating instant payments into payment portals (as a complement or alternative to credit cards).
Next milestone: October 2025
With the full regulatory enforcement expected in October 2025, companies must now include instant payments in their strategic thinking:
- What are the most relevant use cases?
- What internal process changes are required?
- How to manage change with banks and software providers?
